Every country, on one page

A café window on a cobbled street: someone with headphones on and eyes closed, holding a coffee, a magenta scarf on the chair.

The app used to start you with eleven countries in the sidebar. Hearing any other country meant knowing that Portugal is PT and finding the right field in Settings. That is not browsing; it only works if you already know the answer.

One page, every country

There is now a page with every country that has stations, each with its own count, sorted by how much there is behind it. A country with four stations and one with thousands are not equally good answers to “where shall I listen tonight?”.

Names appear in your own language, so it reads “United States” rather than the directory’s “The United States Of America”. One entry that could not be named at all is left out rather than shown as a blank line.

The numbers, honestly

On 16 September the page listed 241 countries and 46,174 stations. When this post first went up, the total was 62,635. It dropped on purpose: stations whose stream no longer answers are now left out, and so are stations only offered without the secure connection a browser needs. Roughly a quarter of the list went, and a smaller number that passed our check is worth more than a bigger one that did not.

The counts come from our own copy of the list, not from the directory’s totals, which still include stations that never answer.

Not there yet

There is no grouping by continent. Doing it properly needs a real list of which country belongs where, and one written from memory is how a country ends up on the wrong side of a line.
